The Government and Public Administration Career Cluster focuses on planning and performing governmental functions at the local, state, and federal levels, including governance, national security, foreign service, planning, revenue and taxation, and regulations.

Overview

Careers in the Foreign Service provide the chance to explore different cultures while living and working abroad. You have the option of working as a Foreign Service Officer (FSO), building global relationships with your host country; or in many other areas, such as IT, management, public affairs, healthcare, or administrative support. People in foreign service careers focus on all types of issues, including national security, trade, culture, the environment, and human rights. They also negotiate treaties and international agreements before they are officially endorsed by the U.S Congress.

Labor Market Information

A Foreign Service career typically offers worldwide travel, government-paid housing, generous pay, and benefits. For this reason, many of these jobs are in high demand, and therefore, are highly competitive. Foreign Service Officers make $62K per year on average in the DC metro area. A career in public management and administration lets you work in government agencies or some non-profit organizations to create the change you want to see for your community. You can draw up plans to direct how DC grows as a city; you can work to improve the water quality in the Anacostia; or you can promote public health programs.

Federal government employment is projected to grow 11 percent by 2028, as many Federal workers are expected to retire over the next decade. However, competition is high during times of economic uncertainty when workers. seek the stability of Federal employment.
